The Amex Platinum Hack: Free Hertz President's Circle Status
i rent cars constantly. shoots, hotel collabs, airport runs, whole trips built around a rental. so the best perk hiding in my wallet is not a lounge or a statement credit. it is rental car status. and if you carry the amex platinum, you already have the top tier at hertz. you just have to claim it.
what president's circle actually gets you
president's circle is the top of the hertz gold plus rewards ladder, and it changes the airport experience in ways you feel immediately:
- skip the counter. at major us airports you walk straight to the lot, find your name, and go. no line, no paperwork ritual.
- the ultimate choice lot. at more than 50 airport locations, president's circle members pick any car sitting in the president's circle section. see a better one than you booked? take it.
- guaranteed upgrades. book a standard car and you are guaranteed at least one class up, up to a full-size, at participating locations.
- 50% more points. president's circle earns half again as many gold plus rewards points on every rental, so free rental days stack up faster.
- an extra driver, free. in the us, a spouse or domestic partner drives free instead of paying the daily extra-driver fee.
- free weekend days. rent over a weekend and the program currently adds a free day after two paid weekend days.
that is the tier hertz reserves for its best customers. the amex platinum hands it to you as a card benefit.
the amex discount layer on top
enrolling through amex does more than switch the status on. the amex program adds its corporate discount program (cdp 211762) to your hertz profile:
- up to 20% off published base rates when the amex discount applies,
- a 4-hour grace period on returns at us locations, which has saved me more than once on a late-flight day.
same enrollment, both benefits. it takes a few minutes, once.
how to claim it, step by step
enrollment is required. the status does not switch on just because the card is in your wallet.
- log in to your account at americanexpress.com
- go to benefits, then travel, then car rental, and find hertz
- choose enroll now, and enter your hertz gold plus rewards number
- accept the terms and submit
a few things that keep it from getting stuck: you need a hertz gold plus rewards account first (it is free, and you can join during the flow), and the name and details on both accounts need to match. give it a few days to show up in your hertz account, and look for the confirmation email.
while you are in the benefits section, the platinum's other rental statuses are worth the same two minutes: national emerald club executive and avis preferred plus come with the card too.
already enrolled? do it again before december 31, 2026
amex rolled out a new enrollment flow for this benefit and emailed cardholders to re-enroll by december 31, 2026. miss the date and hertz may pull the amex discount program off your gold plus rewards profile, and you can lose the president's circle status with it. it is not permanent: you can enroll again afterward and get it back. but it is a two-minute job, so do it now instead of finding out at a rental counter.
how i use it on the road
my routine is simple. i book the cheapest class i am willing to drive, at the airport location, on my gold plus rewards profile. then i skip the counter, walk the president's circle row, and pick the best car sitting in it. the upgrade is not a hope. it is how the section works.
on a recent lax trip i landed late, walked past a counter line i did not have to stand in, and drove out in a class above what i booked. that is the whole pitch: this status turns the worst piece of travel admin into a two-minute errand.
my referral links
if you do not have the cards and accounts yet, these are my referral links. using them supports my work, and they usually come with a welcome offer at least as good as going direct:
- amex platinum: [AMEX_REFERRAL_LINK]
- hertz gold plus rewards: [HERTZ_REFERRAL_LINK]
my personal links drop in right there before this post is final. until then, both programs are free to join direct, and if you already carry an amex card, your own refer a friend link lives in your amex account.
referral disclosure, in plain words: if you sign up through my links, i may earn points, credit or a bonus, and you may get a welcome offer. it costs you nothing extra. i only link things i actually use, and this status is one i use every trip.
the fine print worth knowing
- benefits vary by location and rental type. the guaranteed upgrade excludes some locations and prepaid rates, and the ultimate choice sections are at participating airports.
- skipping the counter needs your license and a payment method on file, and the name on the reservation has to match your profile.
- this is the us platinum benefit. platinum cards issued in some other countries come with a different hertz tier instead.
- amex can change card benefits over time, so it is worth re-checking the benefits page once in a while.
FAQ
is hertz president's circle really free with the amex platinum? yes. complimentary president's circle is a published benefit of the platinum card, personal and business. the only catch is that you have to enroll. it is not automatic.
what if i already have a hertz account? then you are most of the way there. you just need your gold plus rewards number for the enrollment form. if you do not have one, join free first, or during the flow.
does the status work internationally? the status is recognized broadly, but the lot sections, upgrades and grace periods vary by country and location. us airport locations are where it shines.
do i have to book through amex to use it? no. once the status is on your hertz profile, it applies when you rent as a gold plus rewards member. the amex discount applies when the cdp is on the booking.
how long does enrollment take to show up? plan on a few days. enroll before your next trip, not standing in the rental lot.
i enrolled a while ago. do i need to do anything? yes. amex is having everyone using this benefit re-enroll by december 31, 2026 to keep the status and the amex discount on their hertz profile. if you miss it, you can enroll again afterward, but do it before your next rental instead of after.
